Domestic Violence Awareness: Safety, Support, and Hope with The SAFE Alliance – Cases & Cocktails Episode 46

Table of Contents

In Episode 46 of Cases & Cocktails, Bryan and Janice Eggleston continue their Domestic Violence Awareness Month series with a special guest, Lindy Hall of The SAFE Alliance, a Central Texas nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of abuse and preventing family violence through advocacy, education, and direct services.

Over a refreshing Guava Tequila Soda, the conversation focuses on the critical role Safe Alliance plays in protecting victims, rebuilding lives, and educating the community on the realities of domestic violence.

About The SAFE Alliance

Based in Austin, The SAFE Alliance provides comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and sex trafficking. The organization operates more than 30 programs across Central Texas, including emergency shelters, housing support, counseling, legal advocacy, and prevention education.

Lindy, who has been with Safe for over three years, shares that the organization’s mission goes far beyond immediate crisis response. “We’re not just a safety net,” she explains. “We’re working to prevent abuse before it happens and to empower survivors to rebuild their lives.”

Domestic Violence Awareness: Beyond the Physical

One of the most important messages Lindy emphasizes is that domestic violence isn’t limited to physical harm. It also includes emotional abuse, manipulation, intimidation, coercive control, and financial dependency.

“These forms of abuse can be harder to prove,” she says, “but they’re just as damaging—and often the most difficult for victims to recognize because they’ve been normalized.”

This is where Safe Alliance’s educational outreach becomes essential. Through workshops and professional training sessions, the organization teaches communities, law enforcement, and service providers to identify less visible forms of abuse and respond with compassion and understanding.

How The SAFE Alliance Helps

Victims can reach The SAFE Alliance 24/7 through its hotline at (512) 267-7233 or online at www.safeaustin.org.

When someone calls, they’re connected with an advocate who completes an assessment, develops a personalized safety plan, and identifies the best available resources. If immediate shelter isn’t available, advocates help create alternative safety strategies while keeping victims and their children secure.

The SAFE Alliance also provides:

  • Emergency shelters and transitional housing for survivors escaping abuse
  • Counseling and therapeutic services for adults and children
  • Legal advocacy and court support
  • Disability and trafficking survivor services
  • Community education and prevention programs

Safe Futures: Helping Families Navigate CPS Cases

Lindy oversees Safe Futures, a program specifically designed to support survivors with open Child Protective Services (CPS) cases. The goal, she explains, is to prevent children from being unnecessarily removed from non-offending parents and to strengthen families through advocacy, education, and court support.

“Our advocates attend hearings, help parents understand CPS processes, and work with them to create realistic safety and parenting goals,” Lindy shares. “We meet people where they are—not where others think they should be.”

This individualized approach builds trust with survivors who may be afraid to seek help or feel judged by the system.

Domestic Violence and Prevention Through Education

The SAFE Alliance also provides Protective Parenting classes and professional trainings, including an impactful activity called “In Her Shoes.” Participants walk through real-world scenarios from a victim’s perspective, helping professionals and community members understand how systemic barriers and limited options trap many survivors in abusive situations.

“The exercise changes perspectives,” Lindy explains. “It shows that what looks like indecision from the outside is really survival.”

How to Support The SAFE Alliance

The SAFE Alliance depends on community involvement to continue its mission. Donations, volunteer hours, and even gently used household items all make a difference. The organization maintains a warehouse to help survivors furnish new homes as they rebuild their lives.

Those interested in helping can donate or volunteer through www.safeaustin.org or drop off items at 1515 Grove Boulevard, Austin, Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Takeaway

Episode 46 delivers an essential message: domestic violence is not just an individual tragedy—it’s a community issue that requires awareness, compassion, and action. Through The SAFE Alliance and education on domestic violence awareness, survivors gain not only safety and support but also hope and empowerment for the future.

As Lindy passionately puts it, “We rebuild lives every day. We meet people where they are—and help them believe they can start again.”
