Breaking Generational Cycles and Building Hope in Central Texas – Cases & Cocktails 47

Table of Contents

In Episode 47 of Cases & Cocktails, Austin-area family law attorneys Bryan and Janice Eggleston sit down for a powerful, emotional conversation with Lisa Jamison and Brianna Rosales—a mother-daughter duo whose story of survival, resilience, and purpose offers hope to families across Texas. Their journey through childhood trauma, domestic violence, and generational healing is shared in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This week’s cocktail: a bold, tangy Aperol Margarita, made with tequila, lime juice, Aperol, and simple syrup—because at Cases & Cocktails, real stories are always paired with real drinks.

From Crisis to Compassion: The Mission Behind Guiding Paws and People

Brianna Rosales is the founder of Guiding Paws and People, a Central Texas-based nonprofit serving individuals and families in crisis. Her organization fills a critical gap—offering housing assistance and emergency support to domestic violence survivors and others in crisis who have pets.

breaking cycles of domestic violence

“If someone is trying to escape an unsafe situation in Austin or Travis County, we don’t believe they should have to leave their pet behind,” says Brianna. “That’s where we come in.”

From coordinating foster care for animals to finding resources for survivors, Brianna’s nonprofit has become a lifeline for many in the region. Her inspiration? A personal crisis that nearly cost her beloved dog, Dude, his life. After scrambling to find affordable care, she saw firsthand how few resources existed for people in her shoes. That night, she founded Guiding Paws and People—from her laptop at 3 a.m.

The Austin-Area Story of a Survivor and a Social Worker

Brianna’s childhood was shaped by trauma. After entering the California foster care system at age three due to severe abuse, she was later adopted by her grandmother and raised with love—but those early scars remained. Eventually, Lisa Jamison entered her life, creating a strong maternal bond rooted in protection and purpose.

Lisa, a survivor of domestic violence herself, made a vow: her children would not repeat the cycle. Her powerful message—“I’ll go through the bad so you don’t have to”—stuck with Brianna, who used her mother’s pain as fuel to build a better future.

Today, Brianna is not only a survivor—she’s a licensed social worker in Texas, blending lived experience with professional expertise to help families across Austin, Spicewood, and Central Texas.

Domestic Violence Trauma, Healing, and the Power of Telling the Truth

Faith played a pivotal role in Lisa’s escape. After years of enduring emotional and physical abuse, she prayed for a way out—and within two weeks, her abuser was gone. But the scars lingered.

“The bruises fade,” Lisa shares, “but the mental wounds take longer. You carry the memories, the words. Every day.”

With Brianna’s encouragement, Lisa began to speak up about her past with domestic violence. That act of vulnerability—once seen as weakness—has become her greatest strength. The Egglestons commend both women for their bravery, noting how their story reflects the very essence of what Cases & Cocktails aims to capture: raw, imperfect, ongoing healing.

Episode 47 Takeaway: Austin Families Can Break the Cycle of Domestic Violence
